Gridfinity Studio: Plan Your Drawer Layouts in 3D Before You Print

3D Printing

Gridfinity bins are designed on a 42mm grid, which means fitting them into real-world drawers almost always requires planning. Gridfinity Studio is the tool that does that planning visually — no math, no guessing, no printing a test bin only to discover the layout doesn’t work.

Purpose

Plan a complete Gridfinity drawer layout to scale in 3D before committing any filament. The grid auto-adapts to your drawer dimensions, and you can copy bin configurations directly to MakerWorld for instant model selection.

Pre-requisites

  • A browser (no install needed — gridfinity.ftdesign.at runs in-page)
  • Drawer dimensions in millimeters (measure width, depth, and usable interior height)
  • A MakerWorld or Printables account to find/download bin models

Steps

1. Enter your drawer dimensions. In Gridfinity Studio, input your drawer’s interior width and depth in mm. The tool calculates how many Gridfinity units fit horizontally and vertically, accounting for the standard 0.5mm tolerance gap on each side.

2. Visualize the grid. The 3D view shows the maximum grid that fits your drawer — e.g., a 330 × 220mm drawer yields a 7 × 5 Gridfinity grid. Cells are color-coded to show units available.

3. Assign bin sizes. Click cells to assign bin footprints (1×1, 2×1, 3×2, etc.). The layout view updates in real time. Stack different bin heights as needed — the height axis is configurable per bin.

4. Identify the right bin heights. Gridfinity bins come in 1u, 2u, 3u height variants (each unit = 7mm base height). Measure the interior depth of your drawer to determine the maximum unit height that fits with the baseplate.

5. Copy MakerWorld values. Once your layout is finalized, Gridfinity Studio outputs the bin dimensions in a format you can paste directly into MakerWorld’s search or parametric configurator. Find or generate each bin STL.

6. Print the baseplate. Use a parametric Gridfinity baseplate generator (available on MakerWorld and Printables) to generate the base for your exact grid dimensions. Print with 15% gyroid infill and 3 perimeter walls for rigidity.

7. Install and load. Drop the baseplate in the drawer, snap in your printed bins. Bins and baseplate are compatible across all standard Gridfinity implementations.

The Trap

Planning at cell count without accounting for baseplate thickness. The baseplate adds approximately 6mm to your total height requirement. Subtract that from your drawer’s interior depth before selecting bin heights, or your 3u bins won’t fit with the lid closed.
