Pulling Multi-Gigabyte Container Images in Seconds on Amazon EKS

Cloud Platform Engineering

The standard container image pull is a blocking operation: the node downloads the entire image before starting the container. For a modern AI inference container at 10 GB, that’s a cold-start delay measured in minutes. SOCI changes the contract.

7.4×
faster container image pull on EKS with SOCI lazy loading (1.3 GB image: 20s → 2.8s)

How It Works

SOCI (Seekable OCI) is Amazon’s lazy-loading technology for container images. Instead of requiring the full image before starting a container, SOCI generates an index that maps which file data lives at which byte offset within the image layers. The container can start with only the essential files needed for process initialization, pulling the rest on-demand in the background as the application actually accesses them.

The key engineering decision: SOCI works with unmodified OCI-format images stored in standard registries like Amazon ECR. There is no image conversion step, no special build process, no format migration. Existing images get the benefit by changing the pull mechanism on the node side, not the image side.

Measured performance on AWS benchmarks:

  • 1.3 GB Python web service: standard pull 20 seconds → SOCI pull 2.8 seconds (7.4× speedup)
  • 2.5 GB image: approximately 9.3× speedup
  • 10 GB AI model container: up to 60% reduction in cold-start time with parallel pull mode

The speedup scales with image size because SOCI pull time is approximately constant (index fetch + essential file retrieval), while standard pull scales linearly with total image size.

What This Means for You

The practical impact depends on your workload pattern. For stateless web services with fast image pulls and high request volume, the cold-start improvement is meaningful but bounded. For AI inference workloads with 10–50 GB model containers, or for Kubernetes clusters that autoscale aggressively, SOCI can be the difference between a 4-minute cold start and a 45-second one.

Enabling SOCI on EKS requires the SOCI Snapshotter on the nodes — available as a managed add-on for Amazon EKS. ECR generates the SOCI index automatically on push for images above a configurable size threshold (default: 10 MB). The primary cost is the index storage in ECR, which is negligible relative to image storage costs.

Parallel pull mode (available as of 2025) adds concurrent chunk downloads on top of lazy loading, providing additional speedups for very large images without changing the user-facing configuration.

The So What

SOCI is ready for production use and the operational overhead is low. If your cluster runs large container images and scale-to-zero or burst autoscaling matters to your workload, enable the SOCI Snapshotter and measure cold-start times before and after. For AI inference workloads in particular, this is one of the highest-leverage infrastructure changes available without touching model architecture.
